Catechism Program

It has been proven that children build their attitudes and values largely tfrom identification with those adults in their lives who mean something to them. Parents are the first educators of their children. They catechize informally but powerfully by example and instruction. They communicate values and attitudes by showing love for each other, for Christ and his church.

Parents choose whether their child will receive religious education, which includes sacramental preparation in the catechism program. However, parental support remains the most important key to a successful faith experience for the children. Prayer, follow-up on each weekly lesson, and celebrating Sunday Mass together contributes to a rich faith experience.

In order to best meet the needs of the children, parents:
  • Are recognized as the first educators of their children;
  • Seek support from others in the faith formation of their children;
  • Take direction from the church on faith issues;
  • Guide, teach and support their children in their faith formation;
  • Are expected to actively practice the faith; and
  • Attend all meetings called by the parish for sacramental preparation.

The coordinator, pastor and volunteer catechists of Christ the King Parish, work together to effectively provide the following for children registered in our program:
  • Recruiting, orienting, guiding and supporting volunteer catechists through the program;
  • Supporting parents in the faith formation of their children;
  • Teaching children about their faith using the ‘Alive in Christ' and ‘Chosen’ Programs;
  • Teaching, organizing and preparing children to receive the sacraments;
  • Celebrating sacraments as a church community;
  • Forwarding communication to families relating to the religious education program and special events and
  • Following the direction of the bishop and priest through the religious education office of the diocese.

Christ the King Parish holds weekly catechism classes for kindergarten to grade 7 aged children every Tuesday evening 6:00 – 7:30 pm from September through to May.  No matter the time of year, we always welcome newcomers and work them into our program, meeting the needs of the child where they are at.

Registration fee is $50 per year, per family + $10 per child for a workbook.
