February 3 Message

Did you know that in 2001, following the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, Development and Peace – Caritas Canada expanded its program to the Middle East. The participation of the most marginalized people, including women, was encouraged. In Afghanistan, the main objective of our program is to support citizen participation in the development of this fledgling democracy, improve the living conditions of women, and promote peace at all levels of society.

Did you know that in the beginning of the 1980s, a severe famine caused by drought killed more than 400,000 people in Ethiopia? Development and Peace – Caritas Canada launched an emergency appeal and collected $20 million to help the people most affected by the crisis.

January 20 Message

January 14 was World Day of Migrants and Refugees. Never have so many people fled war, persecution, natural disasters, extreme poverty, and development megaprojects. It’s time to step up!

In solidarity with the 68.5 million children, women, and men who have been forced to flee their homes, help us Share the Journey. To learn more , talk to Dale or Roberta, call 1-888-234-8533 or go to devp.org.
January 13 Message

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:21-27). Jesus invites us to follow his example and to think less about ourselves and more about the people around us. He summons us to a life of service and invites us to orient ourselves towards His will so as to find our authentic fulfillment in Him.

This year, the Development and Peace awareness-raising campaign is about the root causes of forced migration. We invite you to seize the opportunity to put your faith into practice and act in solidarity with our sisters and brothers from the Global South who are victims of armed conflict, large-scale development projects, climate change, and oil exploitation!

“Share the Journey” is coming to Christ the King in the spring.

January 6, 2019 Message

Some 68.5 million children, women, and men throughout the world are victims of forced migration. This coming year, Share the Journey with those forced to flee their homes. Watch for our “Share the Journey” campaign and walk coming later this spring.

“Before the challenges of contemporary movements of migration, the only reasonable response is one of solidarity and mercy.” ‒ Pope Francis, homily of July 6, 2018.

December 9, 2018 Message

Social justice is at the heart of Development and Peace Caritas Canada’s mission. For more than 50 years, Development and Peace has supported vulnerable populations in their quest for social, political, and economic justice in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East. The support and generosity of thousands of donors throughout Canada enable Development and Peace to amplify their quest. Together, let us continue to build peace with love, justice, and truth. We invite you to become a Development and Peace member at devp.org.

“Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other” (Psalm 85).

December 2, 2018 Message

Did you know that in 1975, in response to the unscrupulous practice of expelling peasants from their land in the name of development, the Episcopal Conference of Brazil created the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), which has become an important Development and Peace partner over the years? For decades, the CPT has denounced violence against peasants and advocated for land reform to guarantee access to land in Brazil.    Our programs in the Global South are driven by the need to create greater social justice in the world by addressing the root causes of poverty and injustice.
   We believe that for development to be sustainable, local people must be the major stakeholders in the development projects that affect them. For this reason, we favour an approach whereby we partner with local grassroots organizations and social movements that have shown energy, creativity and a proven ability to address the needs of their community. We provide them with financial and technical support so that they can carry out their important work.
   We currently work in 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East on the following themes:
  • Empowering women, indigenous groups and other marginalized people;
  • Building democracy;
  • Promoting peace;
  • Local management of natural resources; and
  • Strengthening respect for human and environmental rights.
   Whether it be helping domestic workers attain regulated working conditions in Bolivia or communities in Nigeria fight against forced evictions, the
actions we take through our programs and partners are creating a world where there is justice for all and where people come first.
   We also take part in emergency relief and reconstruction work in response to
natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
